Obituary for Kenneth Lee Howard, Jr.

Kenneth L. Howard Jr ,71, died peacefully in his sleep on March 23, at Good Samaritan Hospital after a 2 year battle with liver cancer.

He never gave up and was fighting until Thursday to come home hoping to practice his walking when they moved him to a private room. He was called "Miracle Man" at Beth Isreal last year for coming back from numerous setbacks and he was. After finally coming home from rehab in July he worked his way up to a daily 3 mile walk and was thrilled to grocery shop and cook.

Born in Baltimore, Md. to Gladys and Kenneth Howard, he lived there until high school graduation when he enlisted in the Navy nuclear power program and served for 6 years. After sub school he was assigned to the USS Sam Houston gold crew stationed out of New London, Ct. Upon discharge, he remained in New England, settling in Brockton , and attending school and working in the Boston area. He had been employed as a resident engineer for the Ma. Department of Capital Management for the last 5 years.

He was deeply involved in his children's activities - both Cub and Boy scouts, baseball and especially soccer. He had coached for Brockton Youth Soccer for over 30 years stopping in 2016. He coached countless players including all of his children and granddaughter. He was a tireless volunteer for Flagg Pond Skating Club which his daughter represented, even announcing many of their shows. He was an avid reader, news junkie and sports fan, never forgiving the Colts for leaving Baltimore. He was a true trivia buff and in the last few years had started building cigar box guitars. He loved hanging out with his granddaughter, Emily, watching hoky documentaries and attending any activity related to her. Last year Jen, Josh and Emily took him to a ZZ top show with access to the VIP section. It was the best Father's Day gift ever!

Ken enjoyed family/extended family gatherings, picking out presents - this Christmas he actually wrapped them, too. Every Christmas and Easter morning was spent cooking breakfast for all of us. I can't end this without mentioning his absolute delight in teasing me, his wife, about being short, having 9 1/2 toes{not true} and how my collection of decorative snowmen somehow caused real snow which he hated.

He leaves his wife of almost 52 years Melinda Myrick Howard, son David Michael Howard, his wife Marcia and their 2 children, Anastasia and Jason White, his daughter, Jennifer Howard Bonney, her husband, Paul and their daughter, Emily and son Joshua Wesley Howard, 2 brothers, John and Richard Howard and a sister, Penny Glassman and nieces and nephews.

Following Cremation, a Memorial Gathering will be held in the Russell & Pica Funeral, 165 Belmont St., (Rt123) Brockton on Saturday, April 7th from 12:00PM-2:00PM.
