Obituary for Roger J. Dolan

On Saturday, July 20, 2019, Roger J. Dolan, of Middleboro, formerly of Brockton, passed away at the age of 77.

Roger (family and friends knew him as Joe or Joey), was born on May 31, 1942, in Boston MA. to the late Francis and Irene (Sennott) Dolan. He was the devoted husband of 41 years to the love of his life, the late Jean (Jeannie) Marie Hovestadt. He is preceded in death by his older brother Francis/Butch Dolan. Roger is survived by his Daughter Deborah Dolan-DeGirolamo, her husband Frank DeGirolamo, and six grandsons; Nicholas and Brandon Poli, Zachary and Tyler Dolan and Christopher and Jonathan DeGirolamo and a little mutt he rescued from the Middleboro pound named Penny.

Roger was a Veteran of the United States Air Force. He spent the majority of his working years with the City of Brockton Water Department until his retirement in 1999. He pulled double duty for many years, working for the City of Brockton by day, and the State (Commonwealth of Mass) in Taunton by night. A master tinker, he loved working with his hands; he could build and repair anything. His ability to tackle any problem kept him consistently busy with side jobs; fixing cars, working on home renovation and additions, fixing appliances, roofing, plumbing and electrical work. He even had a home lab where he made dentures for family and friends. He took great pride in his 1978 Cadillac Deville that he rebuilt from the ground up. He worked on that car for about year, and its debut drive was to Atlantic City. He held a pilot's license and loved to take his young family flying out of the Taunton Airport. He had a passion for the space program and, ironically, he passed on the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. I'm sure his first stop on his eternal journey (to see his Jeannie) was probably a brief romp on the moon. Roger and Jeannie loved the glitz and glam of Las Vegas and visited frequently. He loved being out of doors; swimming, boating, and camping. He loved to laugh and reveled in comedic movies like Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein that resulted in gut-busting, rib-cracking laughter. Roger enjoyed all kinds of music but preferred the oldies (the 1950's), and Country & Western.

The home garage was his domain. Not only was it his workshop, but it also served as a soundstage where he could be heard belting out a tune or whistling while he worked. His favorite food was donuts with coffee, and he enjoyed both right up to his passing.

He navigated through life on his terms, calling the shots right to the end. He was very much looking forward to being with Jeannie again. And, finally getting answers to burning questions like; do extraterrestrials exist, who built the pyramids, and how were they constructed. He had a colorful and direct way of expressing himself, and It is a widely held belief that he coined the phrase "Are you out of your rabid a** mind?" If there is one mantra he will forever be remembered for It's; "do it right the first time, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right!"

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 25th at 10:00AM in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 441 So. Main St.,(Rt.28) West Bridgewater. Internment will follow in Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00PM.
