Obituary for Andre A. Poyant

Andre Anthony Poyant, 73, of Brockton (currently resided in Carver), passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, after a long illness and health complications at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth. He was the husband of Anita C. (Ramondetta) Poyant.

Born on June 13, 1946, in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Andre A. Poyant and Therese (Miranda) Poyant. Andre served in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam as a chef. He married his wife, Anita, in October of 1970.

Andre worked for the City of Brockton Highway Department, was the sole proprietor of Andy’s Diner on High Street in Brockton and retired from the City of Brockton School Department as a custodian.

Andre had many nicknames; Andy, Dad, Pepe, The Chef, Captain, and Cap. He enjoyed local places for music and friendly conversation like The Centerville, The BC, The Capeway Manor, The Carlton House and Owen O’Leary’s, but his home away from home was at the Enterprise Club in Brockton, where he was a lifetime member, and in the winter, Caddy’s on the Beach, Treasure Island, FL. Andre was also a member of the American Legion in Berkley.

He loved oldies and doo-wop music, watching cowboy TV, Boston sports, dancing, cooking, horseracing, playing cards, and horseshoes. His favorite travel spots were Saratoga, NY, Nashville, TN, and Treasure Island, FL.

Andy loved his family. He was fun, funny, and stubborn, but he was also giving, selfless, generous, and kind. He cooked and provided shelter for those that were down on their luck without expectation, always rooted for the underdog, and had confidence in those that didn’t have any in themselves. He was quietly sentimental, and although he wouldn’t admit it, he did enjoy family tradition. He loved to brag about his wife, kids, grandkids, and friends. He enjoyed people and was proud of everyone he met, especially those he loved. He was known for giving the shirt off his back, and if he considered you a friend, you were lucky.

In addition to his wife, Anita, Andre is survived by his children, Concetta “Connie” Colclough and her husband Chris and Douglas Poyant; his grandchildren, Kendall, Kylee, Maddox and Nicholas; his siblings, Philip Poyant and his wife Janet, Daniel Poyant and his wife Shannon, Julian Poyant and his wife Michel, Constance LeComte, Gisele Gonsalves and her husband Steve and Helene Goudreau and her husband Maurice; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Suzanne Poyant.

A memorial gathering will be held in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., Brockton, on Saturday, August 17, 2019, from 10:00-12:00 PM, followed by a reception at the Enterprise Club, 224 Clinton St., Brockton from 1:00-4:00 PM.
