Obituary for Nicholas V. Celia, Sr.

Nicholas V. Celia, Sr., 98, of Brockton, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center after a brief illness. He was the husband of Fannie (Florio) Celia.

Born August 22, 1919 in Boston, he was the son of Frank Celia and Mary (Yanni) Celia. Raised in Boston until the age of eleven, he then moved to Brockton where he attended Brockton Schools. At a young age he started working at fruit and vegetable markets and also started to learn the trade of shoe making. He then enlisted in the United States Coast Guard where he served on the USS Randall during World War II.

Nick worked for Foot Joy Shoe Company for many years. After his retirement he kept busy working different jobs, including working at Russo’s Greenhouse.

Nick was known for his love of cooking for his family and friends. He enjoyed golfing and had won the Brockton Seniors City Open two years in a row starting at the age of 81.

Later in life, when his daughter arrived he became involved with horses, learning to ride in his late fifties. He was one of the original founders of the Brockton Area Horse owners association. Nick also enjoyed bowling and gardening which was his passion. Often presenting what he had grown. Most people would remember his famous pizza that was served at Chicpeas deli in Brockton on Friday's. His pizza was always requested and was a big hit at parties.

He is survived by his children, Nicholas V. Celia, Jr. and Michelle M. O’Shaughnessy and her husband David; his grandsons, Steven N. Celia and his wife Rita and Robert J. Celia and his wife Stacey; his great grandchildren, Anthony, Joseph, Megan and Matthew; he is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Angelina Desautels, Gloria Petti, Josephine Hicks, Ida Celia, Betty Almeida and Mafalda Walker.

Funeral from the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt123) Brockton on Tuesday at 9:30AM thence to Christ the King Parish, 54 Lyman St., Brockton where a funeral mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at 10:30AM.
