Obituary for Mitchell E. LaFlower,Sr.

Mitchell Ernest LaFlower, Sr., a longtime resident of Brockton, Massachusetts, passed away on March 29th, 2018 after a period of failing health. He was 79 years old.

Mitchell was born on August 19th, 1938 in Northfield, Vermont, the son of the late Leonard Joseph LaFlower of Williamstown, Vermont and Mildred Pearl (Raymo) Beauchemin of Barre, Vermont.

Mitchell enlisted in the Navy in February of 1958, a commitment that brought him across the globe, giving him the opportunity to cross the International Date Line and the equator at two locations. He served aboard the U.S.S. Weeks, U.S.S. Barry, U.S.S. Valcour, U.S.S. Harris, U.S.S. Cook and U.S.S. Trenton. Mitchell was a decorated sailor, having been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged after 22 years of active duty as an MMC E7 in 1979. He remained combat reserve ready for the next eight years, proudly serving his country for a total of 30 years. He was also a gifted woodworker, and he enjoyed sharing his incredible woodworking talents with his family. He also enjoyed attending NASCAR races across New England.

Mitchell is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Mitchell E., Jr. and Donna LaFlower of Brockton, Massachusetts; his son and daughter-in-law, Charles A. and Sandi LaFlower of Brockton, Massachusetts; his sister, Hattie M. Wood, of Vermont, 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased in death by his beloved wife of 53 years, Anna Mae (Reddington) LaFlower; his daughters, Anna M. LaFlower-Hook, and Marcene R. LaFlower; his sisters, Mabel C. LaFlower and Rose M. LaFlower; his brothers Clifford M. LaFlower and Raymond W. LaFlower; his paternal grandparents, Michael E. LaFlower and Mabel Laforest; his maternal grandparents, Ernest G. Raymo and Carrie M. Morehouse; and many aunts and uncles.

Calling hours will be held in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (RT 123) Brockton, on Monday, April 2nd from 9:00AM-10:00AM followed by a funeral prayer service at 10:00AM. Interment will follow in Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to assist with the transitional care of Mitchell’s grandson. Donations can be mailed to 99 Clark Street, Brockton, Massachusetts, 02302, c/o Sandi Laflower.
