Obituary for Herbeteen Mitchell

Herbeteen “Herbie” Mitchell Johnson passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 10th, 2018 at the age of 86. She was surrounded by her family and friends

Herbeteen was born May 13, 1931 in North Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1958 she relocated to Brockton, Massachusetts determined to make a better life for herself and children and to establish a stable foundation. Herbeteen was a dedicated and hard worker, while working as a Seamstress for Davis Clothing for 20 years.

Herbeteen lovingly referred to as “Bigmama” was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She developed a special relationship with her grandchildren and stressed the importance of family, education and hard work, wanting the best for all within her family.

Herbeteen followed biblical principles everyday of her life, as we know, she loved the Lord. In 2008 she re-joined Mount Olive Baptist Church in North Little Rock, Arkansas under the pastorship of Victor Moore. She would encourage those around her to have Faith and develop a relationship with the Lord.

She had a unique love for everyone that entered her life. Herbeteen loved holidays and family get-togethers; any chance to spend time with her family and friends was important to her. To her self-presentation was everything, as she loved shopping and getting her hair done. She loved cooking, sewing, collecting elephants, doing crossword puzzles also enjoyed watching old Western movies, traveling, singing gospel hymns and recently found a new passion making crafty holders.

Herbeteen was the beloved wife of the late Andrew Johnson who preceded her in death along with her father Cloid Mitchell Sr., mother Victoria Badger, sister Geneva Weems, brothers Claude Mitchell and Floyd Mitchell, son Herbert “Billy” Mitchell and son-in-law Willie Johnson Jr.

Left to cherish fond memories of Herbeteen are: brother Maurice Mitchell of Houston,TX, sisters Dorothy and (George) Martin and Kathy Trimele of Gary, Indiana. To continue her Legacy her Children Daughters Vickie (Calvin Jones) Mitchell Royster, of Stephens, Arkansas, Diane Mitchell, of Boston, MA. Carolyn Johnson and Linda (Donald Manley) Alexander of Brockton, MA. Sons: Sammy (Jessica Bertenshaw) Mitchell of Pawtucket, RI and Charles Mitchell of Boston, MA. Sixteen Grandchildren and Fifteen Great grandchildren and a host of Nieces and Nephews.

Herbeteen was known for her strong, “at times stubborn”, kind hearted, feisty, lovable personality with a good sense of humor. Never afraid to speak her mind but considerate of others feelings. She gave a good fight! She will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved her.
