Obituary for Anna (Topoulos) Hatzis

Anastasia “Anna" (Topoulos) Hatzis, beloved mother of Marianne, Melissa, George and James, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018 after a short illness, at 101 years old.

Anna was a lifelong resident of Brockton and communicant of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Brockton where she married Leonidas G. Hatzis on April 27, 1947 and was wed for 36 years until his passing August 1983.

Anna was a multitalented, vibrant and caring person. At a young age, after only 6 months of formal piano instruction, she taught herself to read music and play by ear. Her proudest accomplishment was being able to play the “Maple Leaf Rag” and other complicated compositions by various music masters. Also, as a young woman, she learned to knit crochet and do needle work; many pieces are still in the family home. Later in life she learned to sew and made many garments for her children.

After living with her sister Amelia Vallas and family in Dorchester from 1935 to 1942 she moved back to Brockton and started working as a waitress at Sylvia Sweets Restaurant on the corner of Main and School Street in downtown Brockton, where she met her future husband who was employed as a cook. They married after the war and settled down to raise their family of four children. Anna and Leo encountered many hardships and sorrows at the start of their marriage, having a child Melissa, injured during childbirth who was later diagnosed as mentally retarded and who passed away in 1968. Their first son, George, contracted polio in the epidemic of 1955; he survived the initial illness but became permanently handicapped. Anna was also an accomplished dessert maker, pies being her forte and Apple pie being her specialty and having a husband of Greek Macedonia heritage she learned and became proficient in the art of making Spanakopita, often bringing a large spinach pie to family gatherings where it was happily consumed by family and friends.

For many years she worked at the Handicraft Supply Co., 400 Warren Ave., Brockton retiring at age 75 when the business closed. She then went on to enjoy many years of ballroom dancing. She also loved spending time in her garden, travelling, reading Agatha Christie mysteries, movie musicals, singing and playing the piano, making holiday deserts, visiting her sisters, brothers, nieces and nephews and spending time with special friends. Above all else she loved to entertain anyone and everyone who came into her presence, telling jokes and one-liners and funny stories, in the style of an old vaudeville comic.

She is survived by her children Marianne, George and James; her grandchildren Laura Ryan, Diana and Christopher Deming; her great grandchildren Cora, Melina and Daphne Ryan and her great great granddaughter Alliyah Hope. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews; and her sister in law Irene Topoulos. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter Melissa and husband Leonidas; her beloved brother Nicholas, George, Agamemnon (Memo) and Constantino (Dino); her beloved sisters Aphrodite (Amelia) Vallas and Merope (Marion) Orphannos; her nieces Pauline Vallas Robinson and Diana Vallas and her nephew Theodore (Ted) Vallas. She will be lovingly missed by the entire family. May her memory be eternal.
