Stanislawa "Stacia" Baranowski
March 29, 1923 - April 28, 2017
Stanislawa “Stacia” (Grabiec) Baranowski, age 94, of East Bridgewater, passed away April 28, 2017 surrounded by her family. She was the wife of the late Michal Baranowski who predeceased her on September 14, 1985.
Born, March 29, 1923 on a farm in Niwiska, Poland. Daughter of the late Wladyslaw and Maria Grabiec and sister of the late Anna, Janina and Michael of Poland.
Stacia is survived by her children, Diane Baranowski of Bridgewater, Jenny Baranowski-Balfour and her husband William of Bridgewater and Michael Baranowski, Jr. of East Bridgewater; Beloved grandmother “Babcia” of Mikayla Balfour of Bridgewater; she is also survived by a sister, Helena, and nieces and nephews in Poland.
In August 1944, Stacia was placed on a train for Auschwitz concentration camp but it was rerouted to Germany. She was then sent to Ravensbruek and Magdeburg concentration camps and worked at an ammunition factory. In 1945, she was repatriated by the Swedish Red Cross and taken to Sweden. Stacia then met her future husband, Michal, who was with the Polish resistance during WWII and escaped to Sweden as well. Stacia and Michal eventually immigrated to the United States, were married and raised their family. They became proud US citizens in 1963.
Stacia worked for the ILGWU as a seamstress until she retired. She was a very strong willed, religious woman who loved animals and maintained a large vegetable and flower garden most of her life. She regularly travelled to Poland to visit her sisters.
Stacia’s family would like to thank the staff at Braemoor Health Center and Hospice for all their kindness and care to her.
Funeral from the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 441 South Main St., West Bridgewater on Friday at 9:00AM thence to St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 103 Center St., Bridgewater where a funeral mass will be celebrated for the repose of her soul at 10:00AM. Interment will follow in St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Calling hours in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home on Thursday from 4:00-8:00PM.
