Paul F. McMahon

January 10, 1933 - November 23, 2016

Paul F. “Smokey” McMahon, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 in his home in West Bridgewater at the age of 83.

Paul enjoyed spending time with his family more than anything else. He could often be found at home, aka Smokey’s Barn Farm, working on a project or offering his sought-after advice to a friend or family member. His smile, optimism, and calming presence were admired and enjoyed by all who encountered him.

Paul grew up on Myrtle St in Brockton but settled with his family in West Bridgewater. After twelve years on Copeland Street, Smokey’s Barn Farm on Crescent was a labor of love for Paul, his wife Cathy, and their children. The Crescent street property was always alive with his children, grandchildren, friends, horses and other farm life. Smokey is remembered as a passionate hard worker who loved his family deeply.

Paul was born on January 10, 1933 in Brockton, MA to Frederick A. McMahon and Rita M. Cruise McMahon. He graduated from Brockton High School and enlisted in the Navy, serving on a US Navy Minesweeper as an Electrician’s Mate, stationed in Japan during the Korean Conflict. Paul than began work at IBM as a Key Punch Repair Man and then as a Field Service Engineer when he retired after 30 years.

Smokey enjoyed travelling the country with his Cathy (aka “Mama”) in their RV.  He rode and boarded horses on their farm for many years and was a member of the Brockton Horses Association. During his retirement Smokey was a jack of all trades that loved building and working on machines he bought and sold. He was a septic system installer and a licensed Construction Supervisor, constructing roads and dams. An avid fan of the Red Sox and Patriots, Smokey was also a member of the West Bridgewater Democratic Town Committee for many years and was the town election Warden for many local and national contests. Smokey was a lifetime member Samoset Rod & Gun club and served on the Board of Directors.

Paul was one of ten children and is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings John, Frederick, James, Joseph and Anne O’Brien. Smokey is survived by his siblings Rita (McMahon) and husband Al Lyman of Brockton, Peter McMahon of Newport, RI, Patricia (McMahon) and her late husband Bill Currie of Brockton, Mary (McMahon) and her late husband Harry Baker of East Bridgewater, his in-laws, Judy McMahon of East Bridgewater, Paul and Marilyn Nolan of Andover, Charlotte and Philip Hureau of Lowell, Mary Fleury and her late husband Andrew of Tewksbury, Michael Riddle and his late wife Dorothy of Wilmington and James and LuAnn Nolan of Arkansas. As well as many nieces, nephews cousins and relatives.

Paul is survived by his loving wife Catherine “Cathy” (Nolan) McMahon; Smokey and Cathy were married for 58 loving years. Smokey is also survived by his children Stephen McMahon of W. Bridgewater, Daniel and Kara (Conceison) McMahon of Easton, Colleen (McMahon) and Kevin Kelley of Falmouth (formerly of West Bridgewater), Brian and Marilyn (Grabau) McMahon of Bridgewater; His grandchildren Elizabeth (McMahon) and Nick Carchia, Meaghan (McMahon) and Ryan Gelinski, Christopher McMahon, Amanda Kelley, Michelle McMahon, Keith McMahon, Jay Fernandes and great grandchildren Camden Paul Carchia and Jessie Fernandes. 

Funeral Information

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at 11:00AM in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 441 South Main St., (Rt.28) WEST BRIDGEWATER. Interment with Military Honors will follow in the Massachusetts VA National Cemetery, Bourne, MA at 1:15PM. Calling hours Tuesday 4:00 to 8:00PM.
