John Francis DeCosta
February 11, 1928 - March 13, 2017
John F. DeCosta, 89, of Brockton died March 13th, 2017, at Life Care Center of West Bridgewater after a brief illness. He was born in Boston on February 21, 1928 to John and Olive DeCosta.
John served in the US Air Force as a cryptographer at Scott Field in Illinois in the 1940's. He earned his Master's Degree in Education in 1955. A devoted educator, John held positions in the Brockton School system ranging from teacher to principal. John later moved to The Whitman School System as Assistant Superintendent and eventually Superintendent of Schools until his retirement in 1988.
John was an avid golfer, computer pioneer and home handyman. He enjoyed sports and travel. He was an active member of The Brockton Country Club and The YMCA. He was a communicant of St. Ann's Church in West Bridgewater.
John is survived by his children, John DeCosta III of Chatham, Denise Foley of Kingstown, RI, Scott DeCosta of Brockton and Christopher DeCosta of New Bedford as well as six grandsons and one granddaughter. He was the long-time companion of Ivy Culkin of Easton. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Pauline (Yoemans) DeCosta. He is also survived by his brother, Robert of Carver, and Sisters Olive Reilly of Scituate, Nancy McKenna of Braintree, and Donna Dunn of West Quincy. John was pre-deceased by two sisters Doris Dionne, Gladys DeCosta and brother, Ken DeCosta.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 17th at 11:00AM in the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 441 South Main St., (Rt.28) WEST BRIDGEWATER. Private cremation will follow. Calling hours will be on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00PM.
