Herbert "Herbie" P. Matta

Herbert “Herbie” Matta, 73, of Avon, MA and Marco Island, FL, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness with his beloved wife, Diane (Stork) Matta, of 49 years at his side on Wednesday, May 3, 2017, in Florida.
Born February 22, 1944, in Brockton, MA, he was the son of the late Joseph and Lillian Matta.
Herbie was a 1962 graduate of Brockton High School. He was the former president of the Lebanese American National Club and a member of the Club National. He was also a member of the Middleboro Elks.
Herbie worked for General Dynamics and owned and operated his mother’s lodging house for many years in Brockton.
Herbie enjoyed golfing, playing cards with his many lifelong friends, gardening, and cooking Middle Eastern cuisine. He also enjoyed greyhound and horse racing and looked forward to annual summer trips to Saratoga. Herbie was lucky to have been in attendance at all three legs of the Triple Crown won by American Pharoah. He also attended the clinching game of the 2007 World Series won by the Red Sox. What he loved most was his family and watching his grandchildren’s numerous activities and sports.
In addition to his wife, Diane, Herbie is survived by his daughter, Lori, and her husband, Carl Fischer, of Avon and his son, Michael, and his wife, Andrea Matta, of West Bridgewater. He leaves his beloved grandchildren, Joseph and Bryan Fischer, and Lily and Lauren Matta. He is also survived by his sisters, Theresa Sedoma of Fall River and Joanne Eaton of Hyannis. He was predeceased by his sister, Mary, and her husband, Francis Kelly, and his brother, Bobby, and his wife, Margie Matta. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws, and dear friends.
Funeral from the Russell & Pica Funeral Home, 165 Belmont St., (Rt.123) Brockton on Tuesday, May 9th at 9:30AM thence to St. Theresa Maronite Catholic Church, 343 North Main St., Brockton where the Service of the Divine Mysteries will be celebrated at 10:30AM by the Rev. Joseph Daiif. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Brockton. Calling hours Monday from 4:00 to 8:00PM.
